Lessons Learned"You have learned something. That always feels at first as if you had lost something."
George Bernard Shaw
Hello Fallen Friends,
I tweeted this
quote today, because as you all know by now, I'm sort of obsessed with these things. A good friend of mine suggested that
maybe I should pick my favorites to explain/motivate people/yada yada. So here goes (in the suggested 200 words or less, of
course).
Shaw's quote couldn't fit the lifestyle of the writer any better.
Great writers, bestsellers, classics, books for just family, etc., all have one thing in common. A great voice, a timeless
voice. What makes us love and hate Severus Snape at the same time. Well, not his obsession with the color black; but rather,
the fact that he is complex and easy to understand at the same time. Earlier today, my lil sis asked me where did I get the
inspiration for my ideas, characters, their motivations, and all that makes them seem so real? My answer? From inside me.
The voice I use didn't just happen overnight. It didn't even happen in a few years. It happened over many, many years of experiencing
emotion and pain and happiness. I didn't get it right until I really let myself go, losing all of me in my writing. Frustration,
heartache, happiness, anger, all of it in a tangle of lessons learned in this life.
Take all of that when you're staring at the blank page and just can't seem to move that cursor from the first indent, and
lose yourself inside the way one of those emotions made you feel. Suddenly, you'll find that motivation sometimes comes from
a different form of inspiration. Your characters and readers alike will love your story all the more for doing so.
Happy Writing, KayLeigh
